About Online Learning
Advances in digital learning have enabled the flexible delivery of high-quality education programs at any hour of the day.
What is Online Learning?
NJIT Online programs are fully accredited high-quality graduate degrees and certificates that are offered by one of the nation’s top public Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) universities.
NJIT Online graduate courses follow a similar format to those that are held in person: they are led by a faculty member who is an expert in the field, utilize textbooks, and often require homework, class participation, and exams. NJIT Online courses take place in the Canvas online learning platform, and in Moodle through Summer 2020. Registered online students log on to Canvas/Moodle using an NJIT-issued ID and password to access lessons, participate in discussion forums, upload assignments, take tests and quizzes, and more.
While deadlines tend to be scheduled weekly, some courses may require participation in live online discussions or events, and group work may require meetings with classmates outside of the course.
NJIT Online graduate courses are 3 credits and are offered on a regular basis during the typical academic semester calendar - over 15 weeks in the fall (beginning in early September), spring (beginning in late January), and the summer (beginning late May). The successful student should expect to spend a couple of hours a day studying and participating in coursework.
About Online Learning
Fully-Online
Sometimes referred to as eLearning. Delivery of instruction in which all course activity can be completed online through the learning management system. There are no required face-to-face sessions but students are expected to follow a week-by-week schedule as outlined in the syllabus. Work is typically done in an asynchronous mode and students can complete the coursework without coming to campus. Note: NJIT policy requires online students registered for a fully online course section must be given the option to take their exam in a completely online format, with appropriate proctoring.
Hybrid Learning
Delivery of instruction is independent of time and place, allowing for students to choose to attend class in any of three modes:
- Face-to-face - the traditional classroom model;
- Synchronous online - same time, different place; utilizing video conferencing technologies;
- Asynchronous online - different time, different place; utilizing multimedia learning objects and lecture capture technologies. Students are expected to follow a week-by-week schedule as outlined in the syllabus.
Students can choose to change which option they use to attend courses weekly. Note: NJIT policy requires online students registered for a fully online course section must be given the option to take their exam in a completely online format, with appropriate proctoring.
Hybrid Learning
Hybrid learning also referred to as "blended learning," is the term used to describe courses that are delivered both in-person and online.
Converged Learning
Converged Learning is a new and innovative way of delivering instruction that integrates online and on-ground students into a single learning community, converging the physical and virtual classrooms. Within the NJIT Converged Learning delivery model, there is no distinction between online and on-ground courses. Curriculum delivery is independent of time and place, allowing for the student (and instructor) to attend class in-person or online in either synchronous or asynchronous models.
