Course Registration: Here’s How to Access and Use Banner XE
This guide walks you through NJIT’s course registration system, Banner XE, with practical steps to help you log in, select classes, and confirm your schedule. First-year or returning, understanding this process will save you time, reduce stress, and set you up for a smoother semester.
What is the registration portal?
The registration portal, known as Banner XE, is your online gateway for signing up for classes, searching available schedules, and confirming your choices. It’s the main platform students use to manage their classes each term. Advisors may also use it to review your academic progress or help with planning. The portal’s user-friendly design aims to simplify tasks like registering, dropping, or swapping courses, giving you more control over your academic schedule.
Before you begin
Before logging in to Banner XE, make sure you have:
- Your student ID and password ready.
- An updated web browser supported by the university.
- A reliable internet connection—registration can get competitive, and you don’t want to lag behind.
- Any registration holds cleared with the Registrar’s office.
A quick check of these items can save you from headaches as you move through the process. See the latest updates and course schedules with the NJIT course schedules.
Step-by-Step: How to access the portal
Go to the portal link
To get started, head to the Banner XE portal through the NJIT student registration information page. Bookmarking these pages is helpful for future logins.
Enter login details
Enter your university credentials. This means your UCID and secure password. Double-check for typos, as repeated failed logins can lock your account.
Troubleshooting login issues
Forgot your password or locked out? Use NJIT’s password reset tools or contact IT support. Most universities, including NJIT, provide links directly from the login page to help reset forgotten passwords.
Navigating the portal dashboard
Once in, you’ll land on the Banner XE dashboard. It’s organized for quick access:
- Prepare for Registration is where you view registration data and complete pre-registration requirements.
- Plan Ahead allows you to build course plans, and then load these plans when you’re ready to register.
- View Registration Information shows your current and past semester schedule.
- Register for Classes is where you search for classes.
- Holds will only show if you are unable to register and it displays required actions.
Icons guide you when registering for classes: a calendar shows class times, and an exclamation mark means an action is needed or there’s a message. Classes are simply chosen by hitting the add button.
Feeling overwhelmed is common at first—but it gets easier quickly. Focus on the essentials:
Start with the navigation bar and get familiar with where each option leads.
Check the notification area for urgent tasks or deadlines.
The better you know this layout, the faster you can take action when registration opens. The dashboard keeps you in the driver’s seat—steering your schedule and your success.
Registering for coursework
Finding the course registration section
Go to “Register for Classes” and select the term open for registration. This is where you’ll manage all your class enrollments.
Searching for courses
Use the “Find Classes” or “Enter CRNs” tab to search courses by subject, course number or CRN. The results update as you type, helping you find what you need fast.
Selecting and adding courses
When you find your course, hit the Add button. If you're using the “Enter CRNs” tab, hit the Add to Summary button.
Confirming your registration
Review your chosen courses in the Summary section before finalizing. You’ll see any scheduling conflicts flagged for you. Hit the “Submit” button to lock in your classes. If successful, the status will change from "Pending" to "Registered" under Status. Note that NJIT Online courses have a TBA listed for the class time as a default. This is because our courses are primarily Asynchronous (can be taken on your own schedule).
FAQ section
What if a course is full?
Join the waitlist if offered or keep checking, as students often drop or swap classes in the first week.
Can I drop a course later?
Yes, you can drop courses through the portal during the drop/add period. For late changes, review the university’s policies.
What if I make a mistake?
You can edit changes before final submission. Check your summary before confirming.
